Dear friend of the Monadnock Sustainability Hub,
55 years ago, in what was then the largest day of activism the planet had ever seen, the first Earth Day was born – an expression of concern, urgency, and love for our common home. The spirit of the day was clear: We’re stepping up because we care, now more than ever.
And the government listened. Landmark legislation, including the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency, soon followed, signed into law by a Republican president. A liveable world was not, and should never be, a partisan issue.
Today we are seeing the opposite. Our government is slashing these protections, refusing to listen to the clear majority of the American people – and the overwhelming consensus of scientists – who are deeply concerned about our overheating planet. Another Republican president and Congress is aggressively framing climate as a partisan issue, gutting agencies, seizing funds, and withdrawing from world leadership.
At the Monadnock Sustainability Hub, we want to make three things crystal clear.
First, we’re not backing down. The Hub is the Monadnock region’s catalyst for the transition to renewable energy, and our work continues. Now more than ever, this wave of chaotic, appalling opposition only deepens our resolve.
Second, local climate solutions are imperative. If the federal government is going to abdicate its responsibility to ensure a liveable climate for all, the Hub will redouble our efforts to provide resources for our communities. Now more than ever, we’re convinced that the harvests of the future will grow from local seeds, local roots, and local passion.
And third, we’re stronger together. If the government is trying to undermine our efforts, now more than ever, we will deepen our relationships with communities, organizations, and individuals like you. After all, we Granite Staters know a thing or two about resisting an overreaching government.
In short, the spirit of the day is clear: We’re stepping up because we care, now more than ever. 55 years and counting. Thank you for being part of this important work.
With appreciation,
